Fruit of the Spirit
We come to realize that we are sinners in need of a savior. We confess that need to God, repent of our sin (i.e., we quit trying to live our lives without Him and give Him His rightful place in our lives). By faith we accept that god sent His son Jesus to die on a cross bearing the penalty for our sin and invite that Jesus into our lives as Savior and Lord. At that moment a transaction occurs. We become children of God. We become disciples of His son Jesus Christ. And God’s Holy spirit comes to indwell our lives.
According to the apostle Paul, the Holy Spirit begins to do a work within us. Part of that work is building a God-like character by producing “fruit”. Here is Paul’s list of that fruit in Galatians 5:22-23. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Each of these should not only become evident in the believer’s life; each should show consistent signs of growth and maturity. These characteristics of a spiritual life reflects the nature of the God we serve and the lifestyle He wants to be evidenced in our daily lives.
Pastor Lee in his current sermon series will analyze each of those “fruit”, help us understand each one, and consider ways for us to allow the Holy Spirit to produce them in our lives.
